Crispy Mash Potato Balls

Our second recipe for the #Hotpotatofoodbloggerschallenge is something a bit more out of the box. We stepped out of our comfort zone and made

Crispy Mash Potato Balls with Cheese , Bacon and Spring Onion accompanied by two dipping sauces 

Mash, bacon, cheese and spring onion crispy balls



4 x Medium Everyday Potatoes
1 x Tablespoon Salt
1 x Teaspoon Margarine
8 x Tablespoons Milk
1 x Tablespoon Diced Spring Onion
200g x Fried Diced Bacon
50g x Grated Cheddar Cheese
50g x Grated Mozzarella
3 x Eggs
6 x Slices White Bread

Crispy Mash , bacon, cheese and spring onion balls open



1) Peel and cut potatoes
2) Add cut potatoes and salt to a saucepan of boiling water
3) Boil till soft (±40 minutes)
4) Put boiled potatoes in bowl and add milk and margarine
5) Mash with potato masher until creamy and smooth

Ball Mixture

1) Add spring onion, bacon and cheese to the mash potato and stir till thouroughly combined
2) Use a tablespoon full of mixture and use your hands to shape into balls

Coating the balls

1) Toast the bread and add it to a food processor to make bread crumbs ( alternatively it can be purchased from a store)
2) Add a pinch of salt and half a teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper to the breadcrumbs
3) Crack eggs and add 1 tablespoon of water per egg and whisk lightly with fork
4) Dip balls into egg wash then into crumbs and back into egg wash
5) Heat a generous amount of cooking oil in a deep based pan ( more oil than shallow fry)
6) Fry off balls turning often till golden brown on all sides

Dipping Sauce Ingredients

1 x 250 g Sour Cream
1 x Tablespoon Spring Onion
1/2 x Teaspoon Salt
1 1/2 x Teaspoons Freshly Ground Black Pepper
1 x Tablespoon Fresh Lemon Juice
1 x Teaspoon Granulated Sugar 
2 x Tablespoons Pakco Chilli and Garlic Sauce


1) Half the Sour cream and place into bowls
2) Add spring onion, 1 teaspoon pepper, sugar, 1/2 salt and lemon into one half and stir well
3) Add a pinch of salt, 1/2 teaspoon pepper and chilli and garlic sauce to the other half and mix well

 Please Note: Bacon can be substituted by another protein if needed
